For Release: September 04, 2008

The Bureau of Reclamation announces that work to remove the Old Camp Nine Bridge at New Melones Reservoir is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 8, 2008, and continue through October 2008.  Located on Camp Nine Road, about 8 miles east of Vallecito, California, the old bridge spans the upper arm of the Stanislaus River where it enters New Melones Reservoir, just below Pacific Gas & Electric Companys Stanislaus Afterbay Dam.

The area surrounding the Old Camp Nine Bridge will be closed to recreation and public access during demolition.  Construction crews will be present, and heavy equipment will be traveling on the steep and narrow Camp Nine Road.  Personnel will be in place to manage traffic, and the public should avoid traveling in that area for the duration of the demolition project.

The old bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since the mid-1980s, when the new Camp Nine Bridge was built to span the newly constructed New Melones Reservoir.  The old bridge has suffered extensive damage from fire, flood, vandalism, and general deterioration.  Demolition of the bridge will remove a public safety hazard while providing for protection of natural and cultural resources in the area.

For more information on the Old Camp Nine Bridge Removal project, please contact the New Melones Resource Manager, Ms. Peggi Brooks, at 209-536-9094, extension 211.
