For Release: August 28, 2008

As part of the Bureau of Reclamation's Safety of Dams (SOD) Program, modifications will be made to Dike 5, an earthen embankment on the north shore of Folsom Reservoir, near the intersection of Auburn-Folsom and Eureka Roads in Granite Bay. The construction contract, in the amount of $3,204,790, was awarded on April 28, 2008, to DD-M Crane and Rigging of Alameda, California.

The principal work to be performed includes the partial removal of the downstream face of Dike 5 in order to add features such as filters and drains to control internal erosion. The filters and drains will be constructed of high-quality imported materials that will be obtained commercially and brought onsite via trucks. Supplemental material will be excavated from a borrow site within the reservoir bottom close to Dike 5. Site preparation is currently under way and includes relocation of the trail, development of the contractor use area, and installation of contractor access off Auburn-Folsom Road. Construction is anticipated to begin after Labor Day, with completion expected in Spring 2009.

A detour to maintain trail connectivity between Beal's Point and Mooney Ridge during the Dike 5 work will open on Wednesday, September 3, 2008. Work on the trail detour will continue for approximately 1 week after its opening, and temporary fencing will guide trail users around the work areas. The trail detour will maintain connectivity between Beal's Point and Mooney Ridge even though the Dike 5 crest will be blocked by construction work. The trail detour will provide pedestrians, bikers, and equestrians with a safe route from one side of the construction zone to the other.

The Joint Federal Project (JFP), now under construction at Folsom Reservoir, includes building a new auxiliary spillway consisting of an approach channel from Folsom Lake, a control structure with six submerged gates, a 2,700-foot concrete-lined chute, and a stilling basin. The new spillway will provide improved hydrologic control of storm-induced floods. SOD work to address hydrologic (flood), seismic (earthquake), and static (seepage) risks will include modifications to the main Folsom Dam, Right and Left Wing Dams, Mormon Island Auxiliary Dam, and Dikes 4, 5, and 6.

Additional information on the JFP is available at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/jfp/index.html. For questions or comments, please e-mail folsomdammods@mp.usbr.gov or call 916-988-1707.
