The C.A.S.T. for Kids fishing event will be in full gear providing a day of fishing to children with disabilities on July 13 at Prineville Reservoir State Park near Prineville, Ore. C.A.S.T. stands for Catch a Special Thrill.

This year Mr. Jim Owens, Executive Director of the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation, will be on hand for the event.

"It is a great event for the kids as well as our volunteers," said local coordinator Cindy Larson of the Bureau of Reclamation's Bend Field Office. "This event becomes more popular each year as parents and grandparents request space for their child to participate. But it is especially rewarding for the volunteers who put their heart and soul into making it a great success."

The children range in age from 7-16 years old and have a wide range of physical and/or developmental disabilities or even a terminal illness. Each one receives fishing gear, a tee-shirt, and a hat, Larson said.

There are still available openings for qualified applicants.

Volunteers from the Central Oregon BASS Club will provide fishing boats and expertise to assist novice anglers. The morning fishing events will be followed by a barbecue lunch put on by the Kiwanis Club of Prineville. The Crook County Sheriff's Search and Rescue will be assisting with parking, traffic control, and marine patrol. Girl Scout troops from Bend and Prineville have a special activity planed for all the fisher-kids and their fish.

Donor-friendly groups this year are The Dawg House, Ericksons Thriftway, and Brothers' Family Diner. Others participating are Balay and Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., Ray's Food Place, Earth2O, and Sportsman's Warehouse. New donors and volunteers are needed and encouraged to participate.

Partners include: C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department, Central Oregon BASS Club, Kiwanis Club of Prineville, and Crook County Sheriff's Office.

To register or volunteer for the event, contact Cindy Larson, Bureau of Reclamation, Bend Field Office at (541) 389-6541, ext. 231. In the rare event of rain, the C.A.S.T. event will be canceled.
