As a result of a June 25 meeting between the Bureau of Reclamation, Nevada State Historic Preservation Office and Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the agencies have agreed to continue consultation on Reclamations Date Street 100 Building in Boulder City.

We had a very positive meeting, with a lot of discussion about procedural and technical issues that arise when working with historic properties and Date Street 100 in particular, said Terry Fulp, Deputy Regional Director for Reclamations Lower Colorado Region. We will continue to work closely with the SHPO, the Advisory Council, and the public as we move forward on this project.

As a next step, Reclamation will seek additional technical advice to use in its decision-making process regarding future actions at the Date Street 100 building. Advice will be sought on such issues as how the hazardous materials (particularly lead paint) that were discovered in the building can be managed or mitigated if the building is fully rehabilitated and re-occupied.

Reclamation will also seek additional public comment on the buildings future. Information regarding how comments will be sought, and the timeframe in which they will be sought, will be forthcoming.

As part of a required seismic upgrade program, Reclamation began a rehabilitation effort of the Date Street 100 Building in early 2007. During the rehabilitation, hazardous materials and structural problems were discovered, and, following several months of study, Reclamation announced in February that it would remove the building and construct a new, historically-compatible building on the same site.

However, to address concerns raised by the SHPO and the Advisory Council, Reclamation has halted all work on the building to conduct additional consultation activities. After consultation is complete, Reclamation will make a final decision about whether to rehabilitate the building or replace it with a new structure at the same site.
