The Bureau of Reclamation announces the availability of the Draft Environmental Assessment/Finding of No Significant Impact (EA/FONSI) for the Lower American River Salmonid Spawning Gravel Augmentation and Side-Channel Habitat Establishment Program (Program).

The purpose of the Program is to increase and improve salmon and steelhead spawning and rearing habitat by replenishing spawning gravel and establishing additional side-channel habitat at new restoration sites in the Lower American River between Nimbus Dam and the Upper Sunrise Recreation Area and at Arden Rapids in Sacramento County.

The need for this action derives from: (1) declines of naturally spawned salmonid stocks, (2) loss of spawning and rearing habitat, (3) loss of natural gravel replacement, and (4) blockage of the river channel by dams.

Work is scheduled to start in summer 2008 and continue annually for up to 5 years as funding allows.  Approximately 75,000 cubic yards of gravel will be added to the river at seven sites over the 5-year period. Three side-channels for spawning will also be created or restored.
The Draft EA/FONSI is available for a 30-day public review.  Written comments must be received by close of business Wednesday, July 23, 2008, and should be sent to Mr. Douglas Kleinsmith, Bureau of Reclamation, 2800 Cottage Way, Sacramento, CA 95825.  Comments may also be e-mailed to dkleinsmith@mp.usbr.gov.  The document is available at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=3202 .
