For Release: June 20, 2008

The Bureau of Reclamation announces that construction of the grade separation structure or "overpass"   at Folsom Point recreation area, which began on February 4, 2008, in support of Folsom Reservoir's new auxiliary spillway, or Joint Federal Project (JFP), was completed today, Friday, June 20, 2008.

Folsom Point is a day-use and boat-launch area located at Dike 8, off East Natoma Road at Folsom Point/Briggs Ranch Road, just west of the Mormon Island Auxiliary Dam (MIAD).  The recreation area is managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation under a long term agreement with Reclamation.

The JFP construction company, Kiewit Pacific, has been constructing a haul road from the spillway area near the main concrete Folsom Dam to an area just west of MIAD where excavated rock, dirt, and debris will be stockpiled.  The haul road, expected to be used by construction vehicles for approximately 6 years, would have crossed the paved entry road to Folsom Point, affecting public access.

In response to comments received during the public review process, Reclamation required construction of  an overpass which effectively routes the access road over the haul road.  The public will continue to have uninterrupted access to the recreation and boat-launch area throughout the remainder of construction at Folsom Dam and Reservoir, which is expected to last until 2016.
