For Release: June 12, 2008

On June 10, the Bureau of Reclamation presented the Secretary of the Interior's 2007 Cooperative Conservation Award to the Platte River Recovery Implementation Governance Committee. Wyoming Area Manager John Lawson gave the award to executive director Dr. Jerry Kenny on behalf of Reclamation Commissioner Robert W. Johnson during a meeting of the governance committee in Kearney, Nebraska.

The governance committee was awarded the Cooperative Conservation Award in recognition of their exceptional cooperation and conservation efforts to improve habitat and continued work toward the recovery of threatened and endangered species in the Central Platte River basin.

The governance committee is comprised of representatives from the states of Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, environmental groups, water users, Reclamation, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Platte River Recovery Implementation Program (PRRIP) Agreement was signed in December 2006 by the Secretary of the Interior and the Governors of Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming, authorizing a federal and multi-state cooperative effort to improve and maintain habitat for essential species such as the whooping crane, pallid sturgeon, piping plover, and interior least tern in the Central Platte River basin.

Under the guidance of the governance committee, the PRRIP was implemented in January 2007, providing measures to improve and restore habitat along the Central Platte River through adaptive management and supplying water for conservation purposes.
