For Release: April 28, 2008

The Bureau of Reclamation will hold three public scoping meetings in early May to encourage public participation in the development of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed South Valley Facilities Expansion (SVFE) Project.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) has requested authorization to construct, operate, and maintain water treatment and conveyance facilities on public land administered by Reclamation, the Bureau of Land Management, and the National Park Service in Clark County. Reclamation is the lead federal agency for development of the EIS.

The proposed project consists of an expansion of raw water transmission and treatment facilities and construction of a new system to convey treated water to the southern area of the Las Vegas Valley. The Las Vegas Valley Water District and the City of Henderson have indicated a need to meet evolving water supply demand projections and patterns in the southern area of the Las Vegas Valley through 2035. The proposed SVFE would increase treatment and conveyance capacity to allow the SNWA to redistribute existing water supplies to locations identified by the City and the Water District to meet these projected water demands. It also would provide an interconnection to the existing South Valley Lateral to increase the capacity and flexibility of the system to meet seasonal and regional water needs.

The scoping meetings will give the public an opportunity to learn more about the project, share comments and concerns, and identify issues to be considered during the EIS process. The dates, times and locations of the meetings are:

Each scoping meeting will be an open house format to allow the public to visit with Reclamation and SNWA representatives, ask questions, and view various displays on the project and the EIS. A brief presentation on the project is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at each meeting.

Public comments may be submitted in writing and mailed, e-mailed, or faxed to:
