The Bureau of Reclamation's Central California Area Office and volunteers are once again planning their annual C.A.S.T. (Catch a Special Thrill) for Kids Fishing Fun Fair. This year's event will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2008, in the Tuttletown Recreation Area, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Partnering with the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation for a third year, New Melones Lake staff hope to register 100 disabled and disadvantaged children between the ages of 5 and 16 to participate in this free, fun-filled day. Pre-registration is required and each first-time participant will be provided a free fishing pole, tackle box, T-shirt, and commemorative plaque.

The event will feature boat fishing, shoreline fishing, and even recreational boat rides provided by county sheriffs and the Glory Hole Marina. Shoreline activities will be plentiful with educational booths featuring California reptiles, water safety, gold-panning, casting contests, fishing simulators, and more. A free barbecue lunch will be provided by the Tuolumne County Sportsman's Club.

This year, a special effort is being made to contact social services, foster care, county special education departments, and nonprofit agencies that provide services for special needs children. If you are interested in registering a child for this event, please contact New Melones Park Ranger Leanne Bryan for an application at 209-536-9094, extension 217, e-mail lbryan@mp.usbr.gov, or Kristy Moore with Calaveras Kids at 209-728-8272. Completed applications must be received by May 1, 2008.

For more information or to participate as a volunteer and/or help support this years event, please contact New Melones Park Ranger Leanne Bryan at the phone number or email address listed above.
