For Release: February 05, 2008

The Bureau of Reclamation - in conjunction with several federal, state and local agencies - will conduct a security training exercise at Hoover Dam this week.

Ensuring the safety and security of Hoover Dam and its other facilities is one of Reclamation's top priorities. Accordingly, Reclamation has implemented security measures and developed plans to address events that could threaten that safety and security.

This training exercise will allow Reclamation to practice the plans and operating procedures developed specifically to address a terrorist threat. It will also enhance the working relationships and communication among local, state, and other federal agencies that would assist and respond in the event of such a threat.

For security and safety, the training events are closed to the media and the public, and most of the training activities will take place outside of public view. However, we expect that emergency response vehicles and exercise participants will be noticeable around the area. This may raise some concern among visitors to the dam, or result in the unintentional dissemination of erroneous information by news media or others.

We are informing the news media and others about this event. We hope to prevent the distribution of any erroneous information, and help entities such as yours be able to respond to any questions or concerns that may be brought to your attention.

To repeat: this is only a training exercise - there is no threat to Hoover Dam!

Hoover Dam will continue to function as normal throughout the training exercise. Water releases and power generation will continue as scheduled, and the dam will be open to visitors and tours as normal, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST, all week.
