For Release: January 28, 2008

The Bureau of Reclamation will hold three public hearings on the Northwest Area Water Supply Project Draft Environmental Impact Statement on Water Treatment (DEIS).

The purpose of the environmental impact statement is to identify alternatives to adequately treat Missouri River water using methods and measures that further reduce the risk of transferring invasive species into the Hudson Bay basin from the Northwest Area Water Supply Project. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement evaluates four alternatives; one no action alternative and three action alternatives.

The purpose of the hearing is to seek public comment regarding the DEIS. The public hearings will provide an opportunity for verbal comment on the contents of the DEIS. Requests to comment may be made at each hearing and speakers will be scheduled accordingly. Comments will be recorded by a court stenographer to be included as part of the hearing record.

In addition to accepting verbal comments at the public hearing, written comments may be submitted at the hearing or sent to Northwest Area Water Supply Project EIS, Bureau of Reclamation, P.O. Box 1017, Bismarck, North Dakota, 58502-1017 by Tuesday, February 26, 2008. The DEIS can be downloaded from www.usbr.gov/gp/dkao.

Please notify the Bureau of Reclamation 48 hours in advance if you require special accommodations for these hearings. Contact Patience Hurley at 701.221.1204.
