Reclamation Solicits Comments on Ditch Rider Houses Demolition Project in Fernley & Fallon, Nevada

Media Contact: Jeffrey McCracken, 916-978-5100, jmccracken@mp.usbr.gov

For Release: December 05, 2007

The Bureau of Reclamation is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) on the impacts of allowing the demolition and removal of four former ditch rider houses in Fernley and Fallon, Nevada.  The houses are facilities of Reclamation’s Newlands Project, which is operated and managed by the Truckee Carson Irrigation District.  The ditch rider houses were historically used to house the operators of the manual irrigation facilities, in the days before remote automation.  The removal of the houses is necessary for health and safety reasons since they are no longer utilized, needed, or maintained.

Reclamation is requesting public participation and comments on the environmental process to help identify any potential issues, concerns, and alternatives that should be addressed in the EA.

Written comments on the demolition and removal of the four ditch rider houses must be received by close of business Wednesday, December 19, 2007, and should be sent to Ms. Rinda E. Tisdale-Hein, Bureau of Reclamation, Technical Service Center, Fisheries and Wildlife Resources Group, P.O. Box 25007 (86-68290), Denver, Colorado  80225-0007, faxed to 303-445-6328, or e-mailed to rtisdale@do.usbr.gov.  For additional information, please call Ms. Tisdale-Hein at 303-445-2241.
