For Release: December 05, 2007

The Bureau of Reclamation's Yuma Area Office is seeking volunteers to help clean up 100 acres in south Yuma Valley, at County 19th Street and the East Main Canal, on December 8. This area has become cluttered from years of illegal dumping.

Reclamation is sponsoring this event, which will take place from 8 a.m. to noon. Yuma County, City of Somerton, City of San Luis, Rinker Materials, Bureau of Land Management, Arizona Department of Transportation, Natural Fresh and Mellon Farms are joining in this undertaking. They will provide additional heavy equipment and operators to help move more than 1,000 tires and an estimated 100 tons of trash and debris.

Volunteers will check-in at the County 19th turn-off at the Yuma East Main Canal, on the south side. From there, they will be directed to select sites along the mesa in need of attention. Volunteers are requested to bring work gloves, wear a hat, sun glasses and to use sun screen prior to participating. Pre-registration is available by calling Reclamation, at 928-343-8334. A pizza lunch will be served to all volunteers following the mass cleanup effort.

This is the fourth large scale cleanup this year in Yuma County. Several other cleanups are also planned for early 2008. This cleanup project is part of the Department of the Interior's Take Pride in America program, see: www.takepride.gov.

For more information about this cleanup event please contact Jack Simes, at the Yuma Area Office, at 928-343-8334, or jsimes@lc.usbr.gov.
