For Release: November 28, 2007

The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) will soon start maintenance activities at the Fortuna Pond with rehabilitation of a service well and outlet structure. Work will commence on December 3, 2007 and end on or about February 28, 2008.

This rehabilitation project will alleviate a debris build-up problem in the outlet (ditch) area and improve groundwater pumping efficiency. The pond maintenance plan consists of replacing the outlet ditch with an underground pipeline and rehabilitating the existing groundwater well that supplies water to the pond. Excavators and a drill rig will be used during the project. Caution is urged for those using the levee to access Fortuna Pond when maintenance begins. No road closures are anticipated at this time. The public is asked to use caution while near the work areas.

Fortuna Pond is a recreational fishery built by Reclamation in the 1980's and is located along the south side of the Gila River, approximately 9 miles east of Yuma, Arizona.
