Reclamation Announces November Educational and Recreational Opportunities at New Melones Lake

Thursday, November 15, 2007, 7 p.m. " "Wildlife Wonders"
Have you ever wondered what to do when you find an injured or orphaned animal? Join us as Susan Manning, Director of Animal Care with Tri County Wildlife Care, shares stories and photographs from her 13 years of wildlife rehabilitation experiences including songbirds, raptors, fawns, squirrels, skunks, foxes, coyotes, and bobcats. Tri County Wildlife Care provides rescue and rehabilitation care of orphaned or injured wildlife in Amador, Calaveras, and eastern San Joaquin counties. This program is the finale of the Fall Speaker Series, held at the New Melones Lake Visitor Center, 6850 Studhorse Flat Road, Sonora, CA 95370.
Sunday, November 18, 2007, 10 a.m. " "The Life Zones of Heron Point"
Why are there different trees on north sloping hills versus south sloping hills? Explore the answers as you join Park Ranger Alex Encoyand for a 1½ hour hike on the Heron Point Trail. Discover various communities of animals and plants that live around New Melones Lake and the unique characteristics that enable them to live there. The hike is moderate to easy and limited to 15 participants. Contact the New Melones Visitor Center to make your reservation, 209-536-9543, Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The hike will begin at the Heron Point trailhead in Tuttletown Recreation Area. The gate will be opened specifically for this program. Participants should wear good hiking shoes, clothing appropriate for the weather, and bring trail snacks, water and your enthusiasm.
Friday, November 23, 2007, 10 a.m. - "Walking off the Turkey - a Family Fun Nature Walk"
Have you ever wondered how New Melones got its name? Walk off a little turkey while joining Natural Resource Ranger Leanne Bryan for an exploratory walk along the Lower Carson Creek Trail. Participate in a game of sensory bingo as you learn about the natural and human history of the New Melones Lake area. BINGO!
This is an easy 2 ½ hour, 3 mile walk that will begin at the Ironhorse Amphitheatre in the Glory Hole Recreation Area. Participants should wear good hiking shoes, clothing appropriate for the weather, and bring trail snacks, sunscreen and water. No reservations required.
Saturday November 24, 2007, 5:00 p.m. - "Junior Ranger Program - Fur, Feathers and Fun!"
Become a New Melones Junior Ranger! Learn about our furry and feathered friends at New Melones Lake and how they interact with each other and us. Make a plaster paw print of your favorite animal and examine a variety of animal skins and skulls. Join Park Rangers Mercedes and Tracy at the Ironhorse amphitheatre in Glory Hole Recreation Area. Dress appropriately for the weather. This event will be canceled if it rains. No reservations required.
