For Release: October 10, 2007

The Bureau of Reclamation announces the release of a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Middle Rosewood Creek Restoration Project, Implementation Area F (Project). The Project is located in the Lake Tahoe Basin within Incline Village, Washoe County, Nevada, between Village Boulevard and College Drive.

The proposed project represents continued efforts to stabilize a portion of a watershed that has been subject to various historical stressors resulting in a substantial source of sediment to Lake Tahoe. The Project will implement channel and riparian corridor measures that would limit future channel bed and bank erosion, improve channel conditions, enhance floodplain connectivity, and reduce sediment loads to Lake Tahoe.

Rosewood Creek has been the focus of several studies in past years aimed at identifying, prioritizing, and correcting sources of pollution, particularly degraded stream environment zone conditions and processes that negatively affect surface and groundwater quality affecting Lake Tahoe.

The middle reach of Rosewood Creek, from State Route 28 to Incline Village Mountain Golf Course in Incline Village, Nevada, has erosion control and sediment loading issues. In some reaches the channel has become deeply notched, while in others a wide portion of the floodplain has been eroded. As a result, relatively large amounts of sediment are being removed from the channel and are making their way into Lake Tahoe. The Third Creek drainage, to which Rosewood Creek is a tributary, has been identified as a major contributor of sediment to Lake Tahoe on the Nevada side. The Draft EA is available at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=2873. The Final EA will address any substantive comments received during the comment period. If you encounter problems accessing documents online, please contact Ms. Lynnette Wirth at 916-978-5102 or lwirth@mp.usbr.gov.

Written comments on the Draft EA should be received by close of business Friday, November 9, 2007. Comments should be mailed to Ms. Myrnie Mayville, Natural Resource Specialist, Bureau of Reclamation, P.O. Box 5310, Stateline, NV 89449. For additional information or to request a copy of the document, please contact Ms. Mayville at 775-589-5240 or by mail at the above address; or Mr. Scott Brown of the Nevada Tahoe Conservation District at 775-586-1610, ext. 31, or by mail at P.O. Box 4605, Stateline, NV 89449.
