Media Contact: Justyn Hock, 970-248-0625, jhock@uc.usbr.gov

For Release: September 30, 2004

Testing of powerplant equipment at Crystal Dam on the Gunnison River near Montrose, Colo. has been extended until approximately October 8. The testing will result in high, fluctuating flows in the Black Canyon and Gunnison Gorge. Flows will vary from 1,200 cfs to 1,600 cfs through the weekend. Flows should be reduced to 400 cfs by the weekend of October 9.

During the testing procedures the release schedule will vary. Updated flow information can be obtained by calling 970-248-0600 or by emailing aspinalleis@uc.usbr.gov. Following completion of the testing procedures, Reclamation will notify the community through distribution of a press release.

People fishing or floating the river should be prepared for sudden changes in river flow and river depth; waters may be cloudy.

The generator and turbine at Crystal Dam powerplant have been repaired and upgraded and the flow testing is necessary before the powerplant can begin electrical production. Efforts will be made to moderate sudden flow changes during the testing; however, river users should be prepared for sudden changes.
