Media Contact: Jeffrey McCracken, 916-978-5100, jmccracken@mp.usbr.gov

For Release: September 14, 2007

The Bureau of Reclamation is extending the deadline to submit comments on the Newlands Project Resource Management Plan (RMP) to Friday, October 19, 2007.  Reclamation is preparing the RMP for the lands managed in association with Nevadas Newlands Project to foster proper stewardship of public lands.  The goal is to create a balance of resource development, recreation, and protection of natural and cultural resources for the lands and waters being managed within the region.  The plan will outline Reclamation management actions that will be implemented during a 10-year period.

Public scoping meetings are being held to solicit public comments to identify resource issues on Newlands Project lands and features and to develop alternative management strategies for those resources issues identified.  The meeting dates and times are:

Reno:  Tuesday, September 18, 2007, 6-8 p.m., Bartley Ranch Park Western Heritage Cultural Center, 6000 Bartley Ranch Road (Map)

Fallon:  Wednesday, September 19, 2007, 6-8 p.m., Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way (Map)

Scoping comments on the RMP should be mailed to Ms. Terri Edwards, Bureau of Reclamation, 705 N. Plaza Street, Room 320, Carson City, NV 89701, or e-mailed to tedwards@mp.usbr.gov, or faxed to 775-884-8376 by close of business Friday, October 19, 2007.  For additional information, please contact Ms. Edwards at 775-884-8353.  To see maps of the meeting locations, please go to Reclamation's homepage at http://www.usbr.gov/mp and look under the "In the News" section.
