For Release: August 10, 2007

The Bureau of Reclamation's New Melones Lake Recreation and Resources Branch Office is sponsoring a local trail development event this year as part of National Public Lands Day on September 22, 2007, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers will construct a connecting trail as part of the expanding Heron Point trail system. With a focus on curbing invasive plants as part of the national theme this year, volunteers will also be helping to eliminate star thistle, puncture vine, and other unwanted weeds along the trails. The shoreline nearby has also become cluttered with years of floating debris. Volunteers can help with this and many other needed tasks. Pre-registration is required by calling 209-536-9094, extension 217. Lunch will be provided.

Part of the largest annual hands-on volunteer effort to preserve America's lands, this is the 4th year Reclamation has participated. Last year, 35 volunteers built a bridge and refurbished the Norwegian Gulch Trail in Tuolumne County. Nationally last year, 100,000 volunteers participated in "giving back" to public lands that we all share, collecting litter, restoring recreational facilities, replanting native plant species, and replenishing sensitive habitat.
