The Bureau of Reclamation has awarded a $1.7 million contract for the replacement of two circuit breakers and other electrical work at Hungry Horse Dam, located on the north fork of the Flathead River about 20 miles northeast of Kalispell, Mont.

Gardner Zemke Company of Albuquerque, N.M., was awarded the contract on July 27, 2007. The work, which also includes new wiring to existing control boards and new terminal boxes, is expected to be completed around October 31, 2008.

"Hungry Horse Dam is a vital source of reliable and clean hydroelectric power for the Pacific Northwest," said Commissioner Bob Johnson. "This improvement project is essential in order to ensure the continued safe and dependable operation of power generation facilities at Hungry Horse Dam."

Reclamation's Hungry Horse Dam was completed in 1953; it is located in the Flathead National Forest about 15 miles west of Glacier National Park. The project plays an important role in flood control operations, meeting the growing need for hydroelectric power in the Pacific Northwest, and offering a wide range of recreational activities including an updated visitor's center.
