The C.A.S.T. for Kids fishing event will be celebrating its 10th year of providing a day of fishing to children with disabilities on July 15 at Prineville Reservoir State Park near Prineville, Ore. C.A.S.T. stands for Catch a Special Thrill.

"It is truly a special event," said local coordinator Cindy Larson of the Bureau of Reclamation's Bend Field Office. "We get calls from parents and grandparents requesting space for their child each year. But it's also rewarding for the volunteers who really do so much to make this event a great success."

The children range in age from 7-16 years old and have a wide range of physical and/or developmental disabilities or even a terminal illness. Each one receives fishing gear, a tee-shirt, and a hat, Larson said.

There are still 4 available openings for qualified applicants.

A memorial tribute will be held honoring the life of Barbara Lesser who died September 20, 2006. Lesser was a dedicated coordinator for the local C.A.S.T. event for 6 years. Members of the Lesser family will be on hand for the informal tribute.

Volunteers from the Central Oregon BASS Club will provide fishing boats and expertise to assist novice anglers. The morning fishing events will be followed by a barbecue lunch put on by the Kiwanis Club of Prineville. The Crook County Sheriff's Office will be assisting with parking, traffic control, and marine patrol.

Since there is no local budget, donors in the community are critical to the ongoing success of this annual event. Donor-friendly groups this year are Balay and Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., Ray's Food Place, Earth2O, and Sportsman's Warehouse. Others participating are The Dawg House, Ericksons Thriftway, and Brothers' Family Diner. New donors and volunteers are needed and encouraged to participate.

Partners include: C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department, Central Oregon Bass Club, Kiwanis Club of Prineville, and Crook County Sheriff's Office. Sid Carter and members of the Crook County Unit 29 American Legion/Ladies Auxiliary of Prineville will be volunteering once again, as they have for the past 5 years. To register, volunteer, and for information about the July 15th event, contact local coordinator, Cindy Larson, Bureau of Reclamation, Bend Field Office at (541) 389-6541,ext. 231. In the rare event of rain, the C.A.S.T. event will be canceled.
