The Bureau of Reclamation today announced that fireworks are no longer allowed at Belle Fourche Reservoir. This change is a result of recently passed Reclamation regulation which restricts the possession or use of fireworks on Reclamation lands and water-bodies.

In recent years fireworks have often been restricted at the reservoir because of the dry conditions and accompanying burn bans in Butte County. They have not been allowed for many years at the Rocky Point State Recreation Area or in the wildlife area east of Belle Fourche Dam. These two areas are managed by South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks, whose regulations also restrict fireworks.

This new permanent reservoir-wide restriction will allow for more consistent law enforcement and greatly reduce the risk of fire at the reservoir. The risk of fires associated with fireworks has been a concern for many years because of the danger to visitors and adjacent landowners. The reservoir's large size and many remote locations often make it difficult for emergency personnel to respond quickly.

Campfires in enclosed fire rings will continue to be allowed this summer if conditions remain moist enough, and State or County burn bans are not put in place.

To report a fire on the reservoir lands, call 911. To report a violation of these restrictions, contact the Butte County Sheriffs Office at 605-892-3324.
