Media Advisory -- Reclamation To Present Water 2025 Challenge Grant For Truckee Canal Improvements

On Tuesday, September 21, 2004, Assistant Secretary of the Interior Bennett Raley will present the City of Fernley and the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District with a Water 2025 Challenge Grant Award to assist in addressing long-term improvements to Truckee Canal facilities. The City and the District have teamed to install automated gates and telemetry at Gilpin Wasteway, a remote structure on the Truckee Canal that needs to be modernized to enhance operational efficiency.

The Water 2025 Challenge Grants - administered by the Bureau of Reclamation - provide local irrigation districts throughout the West with matching funds to support a variety of projects to make more efficient use of existing water supplies through water conservation, efficiency, and water marketing projects.

Directions from Carson City - Proceed east on Highway U.S. 50 for approximately 30 miles to Silver Springs. At the four way stop in Silver Springs, turn left (north) onto 95A and proceed about 14 miles to Fernley. When entering the south side of Fernley, the highway will cross the Truckee Canal. Cross the canal and immediately turn right on the north bank of the canal. Proceed down the Truckee Canal to the Fernley Check Structure.

Directions from Reno - Proceed east on Interstate 80 and take Exit 46. Turn right off the ramp and follow the main street south around a large curve. The road proceeds east into Fernley. At the traffic light past the Wigwam Restaurant, turn right onto 95A and proceed south. Before the road crosses the Truckee Canal, turn left onto the canal bank and proceed to the Fernley Check Structure.
