Delta Cross Channel Gates Open for Memorial Day Weekend

For Release: May 24, 2007

The Bureau of Reclamation will open the Delta Cross Channel Gates (DCC) during the Memorial Day weekend beginning 9 a.m. on Friday, May 25, 2007.  Boat traffic will be allowed through the gates from 10 a.m. on Friday through the Memorial Day weekend until 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29.  The DCC is a controlled diversion channel on the Sacramento River about 30 miles south of Sacramento that diverts water from the river into a branch of the Mokelumne River.

When the gates are open, fresh water is drawn from the Sacramento River into the interior of the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta through Snodgrass Slough and the Mokelumne River. The water is used to combat salt water intrusion in the Delta, dilute local pollution, and improve the quality of irrigation supplies in the Central Valley.

Reclamation closes the DCC control gates during high water flows and to assist out-migration of fish.   Reclamation opens the gates to allow Sacramento River water through to the C.W. “Bill” Jones Pumping Plant that Reclamation operates.

Information on gate operations can be accessed on Reclamation’s Central Valley Operations website at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/cvo/vungvari/dcc_chng.txt.  For additional information, please call the Public Affairs Office at 916-978-5100 or TDD 916-978-5608
