For Release: May 15, 2007

The Bureau of Reclamation announces the availability of the Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Stanislaus River Salmonid Spawning Gravel Addition 2007.

The project would replenish spawning gravel at existing and new restoration sites in the Lower Stanislaus River near Knights Ferry Bridge to increase and improve Chinook salmon, steelhead, and native rainbow trout (salmonid) spawning habitat.  The need for the action derives from the declines of salmonid stocks due in part to loss of spawning habitat because dams prevent gravel replenishment needed for spawning in the river channel.

Work would start in the summer of 2007 and continue yearly for up to 5 years as funding allows. Up to 5,000 cubic yards of gravel per year (25,000 cubic yards over the 5-year period) would be added to the river.  Within a 5,700-foot reach of the river, gravel would be placed at up to eight sites for a total length of about 900 feet.

The Draft EA and FONSI are available for a 30-day public review.  Comments are due to Mr. Douglas Kleinsmith by close of business, Wednesday, June 13, 2007.  The documents are available at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=2720.  If you encounter problems accessing documents online, please contact Ms. Lynnette Wirth at 916-978-5102 or e-mail lwirth@mp.usbr.gov.

To request a copy of the draft documents, please contact Mr. Kleinsmith at 916-978-5034 or e-mail dkleinsmith@mp.usbr.gov.
