The Bureau of Reclamation's Fresno Office is partnering with RiverTree Volunteers to sponsor a cleanup of the San Joaquin River on Saturday, September 18, 2004, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Fresno area. Volunteer sign-in and registration will occur at 8666 W. Herndon Avenue (west of Highway 99 on Herndon Avenue). The Community Clean Up Day will take place in recognition of "National Public Lands Day" and the "Take Pride in America" campaign where Federal agencies partner with local organizations and citizens to improve surrounding communities and as a part of the statewide "California Coastal Commission's Coastal Clean Up Day" also held September 18, 2004.

Volunteers are asked to wear long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy shoes. Adults are to accompany any volunteers under 18 years of age. Those volunteering for the day will have assistance from individuals from the Sierra Club, East Fresno Rotary Club, Fresno City College, California State University - Fresno, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Once the community cleanup program is completed, RiverTree Volunteers will continue efforts to encourage the public to keep the San Joaquin River free of trash.

To sign up as a volunteer, please call Richard Sloan of RiverTree Volunteers at 559-696-2971 or Valerie Curley of Reclamation at 559-487-5255.
