Curtis Brown Named Reclamation's Director of Research and Development

Reclamation Commissioner Robert W. Johnson announced that Curtis A. Brown, Ph.D., has been selected as Director, Research and Development.
Reclamation's Research and Development Program focuses on applying scientific and technological advances to address the water management challenges that Reclamation faces.
"This position is critical to Reclamation as we work to meet the many water supply issues that we face," said Commissioner Johnson. "Curt brings a diverse scientific and management background that will help Reclamation's Research and Development program move forward."
Since 1997, Brown has been the Manager of the Platte River Environmental Impact Study Office, Great Plains Region, carrying out the NEPA process and technical studies for the proposed cooperative recovery program for the Platte River basin. In this position he guided various scientific studies and analyses that helped formulate and evaluate the proposed program.
Brown joined Reclamation in 1979 and has worked on a variety of technical problems. These include applying decision analysis methods to public participation for large planning studies, researching the factors affecting loss of life from flooding, developing the use of early warning systems for Reclamation dams, and working on the Glen Canyon Environmental Studies as the technical advisor for the recreation and safety studies.
In 1995, Brown was the Program Manager for the Western Water Policy Review Advisory Commission where he organized and implemented the investigations of the 22-member Commission, working with other federal agencies, state agencies, and Congress. The Commission produced a report along with 30 technical studies on a wide range of issues confronting water management in the West.
Brown received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1974, and holds a Ph.D. in social psychology, with an emphasis in decision analysis, from the University of Colorado in 1981.
