The Bureau of Reclamation, in cooperation with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks (SDGFP), has started work on a Resource Management Plan (RMP) for Angostura Reservoir. Reclamation is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the RMP in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

The RMP will provide the public an opportunity to participate and provide input into the decision making process that will guide the future planning and management of lands and facilities at the reservoir. In an effort to gather public comments and provide additional information on the project, Reclamation and SDGFP will hold an open house on April 9, 10, and 12 from 2:00 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 8:00 p.m., at the following locations:

  • Monday, April 9, 2007 - Rapid City, S.D.
Best Western Ramkota and Conference Center, 2111 North LaCrosse St.
  • Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - Hot Springs, S.D.
Mueller Center, 801 South 6th Street
  • Thursday, April 12, 2007 - Chadron, N.E.
    Motel 6, 755 Microtel Drive

Angostura Reservoir's prime location and numerous recreational opportunities make it one of the most popular destinations in southwestern South Dakota and the surrounding region. As the region continues to grow, visitation is expected to increase. The RMP is intended to guide this increasing recreation use by providing a blueprint for the future use, management, and development for Angostura Reservoir and surrounding lands. While the RMP will not address water operations or the Angostura Irrigation District, it will include other areas such as public access, water quality, wildlife and fisheries, and vegetation management.

Additional information about the RMP can be found at www.usbr.gov/gp/dkao/ or by contacting Ryan Alcorn, Bureau of Reclamation, by phone 605-394-9757 or by e-mail: ralcorn@gp.usbr.gov.

Individuals with disabilities which may require special accommodations to participate in the open houses, should contact Dennis Taft at 605-394-9757 at least 10 days in advance so arrangements can be made.

You may also submit written comments on the RMP to Ryan Alcorn, Bureau of Reclamation, 515 9th Street, Room 101, Rapid City, South Dakota 55701; or by emailing them to ralcorn@gp.usbr.gov. Please send us your comments by June 1, 2007, so they may be considered in the development of alternatives for the RMP.
