The Bureau of Reclamation is installing foundation instrumentation at Gibson Dam near Augusta, according to Montana Area Manager Dan Jewell. The work is expected to start in late March and continue through May 2007.

Jewell said the work is necessary to provide additional capability for measuring water pressures beneath the dam. The project involves drilling a number of holes into the rock foundation of the right abutment to install the instruments. No change in reservoir operations is anticipated during the project.

Gibson Dam is a concrete arch dam on the Sun River about 75 miles northwest of Great Falls. Completed in 1929, the dam is a key storage feature of Reclamation's Sun River Project. The dam was first modified in 1938 and again in 1982. Gibson Dam is operated and maintained by the Greenfields Irrigation District.

Questions concerning the modifications should be directed to Ms. Paula Holwegner of Reclamation's Montana Area Office at (406) 247-7300.
