Draft EA/IS Available for the Coleman National Fish Hatchery Water Intakes Rehabilitation Project

The Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Regional Water Quality Control Board today announced the availability of the Draft Environmental Assessment/Initial Study (Draft EA/IS) for the Coleman National Fish Hatchery Water Intakes Rehabilitation Project for public review and comment.  Coleman National Fish Hatchery is located about 13 miles south of Redding, California.

The Draft EA/IS describes the proposed project and assesses the potential effects to biological, cultural, and socioeconomic resources that may occur as a result of the various alternatives that have been developed.  The issues addressed in the alternatives include fisheries, water quality, traffic, noise, air quality, historic resources, threatened and endangered species, and socioeconomic factors.  The proposed project is designed to accomplish three main objectives:

  • Meet Federal and State regulatory requirements for screens to reduce the take of listed and nonlisted anadromous salmonids
  • Provide a reliable, high-quality water supply to meet hatchery operational needs, within the confines of the hatcherys water rights (122 cubic feet per second)
  • Provide sufficient, rapid access to intake structures to ensure proper operation and maintenance.

The release of the Draft EA/IS signals the beginning of a 30-day public review and comment period on the proposed project.  A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, in Red Bluff, CA, from 5 - 6:30 p.m., at the Red Bluff Community/Senior Center, 1500 South Jackson Street.  During the meeting, staff from the lead agencies will give an overview of the project and answer questions.  After the comment period is completed, all comments will be compiled and assessed, and the Draft EA/IS will be revised as needed.
The Draft EA/IS is available at:  http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=2596.  If you encounter problems accessing documents online, please contact Ms. Lynnette Wirth at 916-978-5102 or e-mail lwirth@mp.usbr.gov.

Comments on the Draft EA/IS must be received by close of business Friday, April 13, 2007.  Comments should be mailed to Mr. James De Staso, Bureau of Reclamation, 16349 Shasta Dam Blvd, Shasta Lake, CA 96019-8400, faxed to 530-275-2441, or e-mailed to jdestaso@mp.usbr.gov.  For additional information or to request a copy of the Draft EA/IS, please contact Mr. De Staso at 530-276-2046.
