Water Re-use to Result from Solano Irrigation District's Water 2025 Challenge Grant; Event Scheduled

Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Robert Johnson will present a Water 2025 Challenge Grant Award to the Solano Irrigation District (District) during a ceremony in Vacaville, California, on February 21, 2007.  With the Grant funds, the District will construct a new Carrington Recovery Dam which will provide the opportunity to recover 500 acre-feet per year of farm tailwater runoff and canal spill flows for re-use.  The total project cost is $150,000, including a Water 2025 contribution of $70,000.

Formed in 1948, the District has entitlements from the Federal Solano Project for 151,000 acre-feet of water for agricultural and urban use in Solano County each year.  The District also owns and operates numerous ground-water wells.  In addition, it is the operator of the Solano Project (Monticello Dam, Solano Diversion Dam, and the Putah South Canal) delivering Lake Berryessa water to four cities, to the Maine Prairie Water District, and to 1,900 District customers.  The District owns and operates the 11-megawatt hydroelectric powerplant located at the base of Monticello Dam.  The District has been engaged in a wide variety of water conservation programs since 1991.
