For Release: February 08, 2007

On February 1, 2007, the Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $6,671,645, 2-year contract to Gracon Corporation, Loveland, Colorado, to modify the fish barrier weir and associated ladders at the Coleman National Fish Hatchery.  The hatchery is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Redding, California, on Battle Creek in Shasta County.  Reclamation anticipates that major construction activities would begin in spring 2007.

The goal of the Fish Barrier Weir and Ladder Modification Project at Coleman National Fish Hatchery is to improve fish passage and blockage capabilities at the first in-creek structure encountered in Battle Creek.  The modifications to the weir and ladder are needed to reduce the undesired upstream movement of fall Chinook salmon – consistent with Battle Creek fishery management objectives, and to improve fish passage at this site using fish ladder designs that are consistent with those proposed for upstream.  For further information, contact Ms. Sandy Osborn, Reclamation Project Manager, at 916-978-5129 or at sosborn@mp.usbr.gov.
