For Release: October 27, 2006

The Bureau of Reclamation has filed the Final Environmental Impact/Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) for the Contra Costa Water District (CCWD) Alternative Intake Project (Project) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and has made the document available to the public. Reclamation, along with CCWD, prepared the Final EIR/EIS pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act to evaluate alternatives for the proposed construction and operation of a new drinking water intake for CCWD in the central Delta. The Project is proposed to protect and improve drinking water quality for CCWDs customers. The proposed action includes constructing a new 250-cubic-foot-per-second-screened drinking water intake and pump station and a buried pipeline that would connect to CCWD's existing facilities. Potential Federal involvement may include the approval of an additional point of diversion pursuant to CCWD's water service contract with Reclamation.

In addition to a No-Action Alternative, the Final EIR/EIS evaluated four Action Alternatives: the Proposed Action Alternative, an Indirect Pipeline Route Alternative, a Modified Operations Alternative, and a Desalination Alternative. A final decision, which will be documented in a Record of Decision (ROD), cannot be made until at least 30 days after the Notice of Availability is published in the Federal Register. The ROD will identify the recommended action to be implemented and include the environmental commitments and mitigation measures to be applied to the action.
