For Release: October 18, 2006

The Bureau of Reclamation will conduct drilling investigations at Nelson Reservoir Dikes, near the North Canal Outlet Works and the South Canal Outlet Works, beginning about November 1, 2006. The work is a continuation of investigations initiated earlier this year as part of Reclamation's Safety of Dams Program, and will require about eight weeks to complete. While working on the crest, traffic will be reduced to one lane in the area of drilling. The work will be conducted with the assistance of the Malta Irrigation District.

Nelson Reservoir, located about 19 miles northeast of Malta, is an off-stream storage feature of Reclamation's Milk River Project. The facility is operated and maintained by the Malta Irrigation District. The reservoir is impounded by the Nelson Dikes which were constructed by Reclamation in 1914 and 1915, and then enlarged in 1921 and 1922.
