For Release: October 06, 2006

On Saturday, October 21, 2006, the Bureau of Reclamation will host a National Public Lands Day event at the New Melones Lake Visitor Center. The public, organizations, and local businesses are invited to assist with this event.

The event will focus on improving the Norwegian Gulch Interpretive Trail, a little-used trail near Highway 49 and the Stanislaus River Bridge. Volunteers will work to improve the trail, build a small bridge, and install steps. Other projects may include litter pickup and removal of invasive plants.

The event also includes Gold Rush-era living history activities, Native American crafts, and musical entertainment. Lunch, water, and safety equipment will be provided to volunteers.

Pre-register by calling Park Rangers Alex Encoyand or Chris Robbins at 209-536-9094. Registration on-site begins at 8 a.m. on October 21. The Visitor Center is located on Highway 49, 8 miles north of Sonora and 6 miles south of Angels Camp, California.

On National Public Lands Day in 2005, 90,000 volunteers across the country built trails and bridges, cleaned graffiti, planted trees, and removed invasive plants from Federal, State, and local public lands.
