The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a contract for the replacement of the excitation systems in each of the eight generators at Glen Canyon Dam. The new excitation systems will allow for improved generator control and assist with power stability on the Western states transmission system. The new system should also help decrease maintenance costs.

"Replacing the old excitation system will provide greater control of the generators as well as improved service to the power customers," said Bill Rinne, Acting Commissioner for the Bureau of Reclamation

Excitation systems control the output voltage of the generators. They are also key elements in allowing the generators to support the electro-magnetic fields necessary for a stable transmission system. When generators are started, the excitation system brings the voltage up on the generator until it matches the transmission system voltage. The generator can then be safely connected to the system for power production.

Turbine Control Services Association, Inc., of Pittsburg, Pa., was awarded the contract on September 7. Additional work by the contractor includes removing the dc exciter and training personal on the new excitation system and testing.
