For Release: August 24, 2006

On Tuesday, August 29, 2006, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Bureau of Reclamation will decrease flow in the Lower American River below Nimbus Dam from 3,000 cubic-feet per second (cfs) to 1,000 cfs to perform maintenance and prepare the Nimbus Fish Hatchery weir foundation for installation of the weirs super structure. Reclamation will increase flows back up to 3,000 cfs once the work is completed each day.

Continuing work will be accomplished on Wednesday, August 30 as Reclamation installs the fish weir super structure; this work is scheduled between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Flows will be reduced again to 1,000 cfs and then returned to 3,000 cfs when the work is concluded. An additional day maybe needed to finish additional work on August 31. The final phase of work to install the fish weir racks is scheduled for Monday, September 18. The racks are used to guide Chinook salmon into the hatchery fish ladder.

Flows through the Labor Day weekend are expected to be at 3,000 cfs which is about 500 cfs higher than normal; however, if conditions change and require an adjustment, an update will be issued. Recreationists on or along the Lower American River are advised to exercise caution due to cold river temperatures and higher flow conditions.
