For Release: July 14, 2006

The Bureau of Reclamation has made available the Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Final Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Geologic Drilling and Aggregate Sampling Program (Program) for the Upper San Joaquin River Basin Storage Investigation (Investigation).

The Program encompasses feasibility-level geologic drilling and aggregate sampling investigations at two potential dam sites on the Upper San Joaquin River. The Program is being conducted as part of the Investigation, which is evaluating the feasibility of implementing various alternatives to provide additional water storage capacity for the San Joaquin River watershed.

The Final EA and FONSI were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. Reclamation determined that the actions proposed by the Program will not result in significant impacts to the environment and will implement the Program after the completion of Section 106 consultation under the National Historic Preservation Act. The drilling and aggregate sampling are expected to begin during the week of July 24, 2006.

The draft environmental documents were made available for a 30-day public review and comment period on May 12, 2006. The Final EA addresses substantive comments received during the comment period. The final documents are available online at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/sccao/storage/docs/index.html.
