For Release: July 12, 2006

The Bureau of Reclamation has issued a Draft Environmental Assessment evaluating the impacts of improving the Powder House Cove recreational facilities at Prineville Reservoir, in cooperation with Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Prineville Reservoir is located on the Crooked River near Prineville, Oregon.

The Draft Environmental Assessment supplements a conceptual design of the proposal evaluated in the August 2003 Prineville Reservoir Resource Management Plan with project-specific details and associated potential environmental impacts.

The Powder House Cove Expansion includes a new boat launch, parking area, and a new road to access the proposed parking area. More parking spaces at Powder House Cove would help eliminate the safety issues associated with overflow parking on the shoulders of Highway 27.

The proposed project provides opportunities to protect and enhance resources while providing opportunities for the public to enjoy this unique area.

Comments on the Environmental Assessment will be accepted until August 11 and may be sent to: Ms. Tanya Sommer, Bureau of Reclamation, 1201 NE Lloyd Blvd., Suite 750, Portland OR 97232 or by email to tsommer@pn.usbr.gov.

The assessment is available online at www.usbr.gov/pn/programs/ea/oregon/powderhouse/index.html. A copy of the document can be obtained from Reclamation by contacting Ms. Tanya Sommer at (503) 872-2846 or by email at tsommer@pn.usbr.gov. Printed copies are available for public review at the Crook County Library in Prineville and the Bend Public Library.
