A $903,827 contract was awarded by the Bureau of Reclamation on June 26 to Prestige Management, Inc., of Oklahoma City, Okla., to perform daily janitorial services at the Hoover Dam visitor facilities and the dam's administrative offices.

Prestige Management will provide the full spectrum of customer service, janitorial cleaning, and quality control and related services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant environment for a facility that receives about 1.25 million visitors annually.

"One of the biggest challenges for the janitorial contractor is trying to perform the job while surrounded by 3,000 to 4,000 tourists every day," said Patricia Smith, Visitor Services director. "Keeping the restrooms in clean, operable service, for example, is an enormous task with their non-stop usage."

"The copper and brass railings and other fixtures at Hoover Dam require constant polishing to remove fingerprints from tourists and employees," she added. "The more than 13,100 square feet of glass in the Visitor Center requires daily maintenance to give that unobstructed view of dam and its surrounding environment. The job requires around-the-clock staffing to do continual cleaning while tourists are here, and nighttime staffing to do heavy duty cleaning after tourists and employees have left for the day."

Vince Yarborough, Facilities Maintenance supervisory specialist, noted that the contractor will also be required to keep concrete walkways throughout the dam free of natural seepage, and also keep the dam's approximately 3,200 square feet of terrazzo floors clean and neatly polished.

Prestige Maintenance's contract becomes effective on Aug. 1, 2006, and includes provisions for four possible one-year extensions.
