For Release: June 28, 2006

The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) has initiated vehicle traffic restrictions on the Lower Cibola Bridge, located at River Mile 93.6, approximately 23 miles south of Blythe, Calif. Until further notice, it is safe for only passenger vehicles - cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs - to use the bridge. Commercial trucks and vehicles over 4 tons are not allowed.

During a recent routine facilities inspection, Reclamation engineers discovered that the surface deck of the bridge appears to have shifted. A more thorough engineering analysis is presently being conducted.

The bridge spans the Colorado River between Arizona and California, and provides access to the south end of the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge from the river's protection levee system in an area known as the Island Unit.

"Traffic barriers have been put in place to restrict vehicle traffic to the center of the bridge as a safety precaution," said John English, Reclamation's Yuma Area Office Facilities Engineering Group Manager. "After the bridge has been thoroughly assessed, corrective action will be initiated."

The restrictions are expected to remain in effect until further notice. Vehicle operators are reminded to use caution and follow directional signs when using the bridge.
