For Release: June 08, 2006

The Bureau of Reclamation has filed the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the San Luis Drainage Feature Re-evaluation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and has made the document available to the public. Reclamation prepared the environmental document, pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act, to evaluate options for providing drainage service to the San Luis Unit of the Central Valley Project. The proposed Federal action is to plan and construct a drainage system for the San Luis Unit. This proposed action would meet the needs of the San Luis Unit for drainage service, fulfill the requirements of a February 2000 Court Order issued in litigation concerning drainage in the San Luis Unit, and be completed under the authority of Public Law 86-488.

In addition to a No-Action Alternative, the Final EIS evaluated seven action alternatives: In-Valley Disposal, In-Valley/Groundwater Quality Land Retirement, In-Valley/Water Needs Land Retirement, In-Valley/Drainage Impaired Area Land Retirement, Ocean Disposal, Delta-Chipps Island Disposal, and Delta Carquinez Strait Disposal. A final decision, which will be documented in a Record of Decision (ROD), cannot be made until at least 30 days after the Notice of Availability is published in the Federal Register. The ROD will identify the recommended action to be implemented and include the environmental commitments and mitigation measures to be applied to the action.
