For Release: May 10, 2006

On May 16, 17, and 18, 2006, the Bureau of Reclamation will host three open houses in southern California to provide information and seek public input on the Draft Coachella Canal Area Resource Management Plan and Environmental Assessment (RMP/EA).

The open house dates, locations, times, and schedules are:

* Tuesday, May 16, Coachella Community Center, 84-620 Bagdad Street, Coachella, California, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a presentation about the RMP/EA from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

* Wednesday, May 17, Indio Community Center, 45-871 Clinton Street, Indio, California, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a presentation about the RMP/EA from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Thursday, May 18, La Quinta Community Center, 77-865 Avenida Montezuma (in La Quinta Village), La Quinta, California, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a presentation about the RMP/EA from 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

During these open houses, Reclamation representatives will be available to provide information and respond to questions about the Draft RMP/EA. Attendees will be able to view information about the area included in the Draft RMP/EA and provide written comments.

The area covered by the Draft RMP/EA is within Riverside County and consists of about 30 miles of the Coachella Canal and 3,990 acres of Reclamation lands. It does not cover the care, operation, or maintenance of the Canal or its associated protective works and water delivery facilities. These activities are managed by Coachella Valley Water District and are not subject to modification by the RMP.

The Draft RMP/EA was prepared using public input from scoping meetings, public information meetings, and the public review of draft alternatives. The RMP describes the processes Reclamation will use over the next 10 years to develop the area's land and recreation resources while, at the same time, protecting the environment. The EA analyzes the environmental effects of the action alternatives compared to the No Action Alternative. Since the alternatives developed for the RMP are general in nature, site-specific NEPA compliance will be required before any ground-disturbing management actions of the RMP can be implemented.

All open house facilities are physically accessible to people with disabilities. Please direct requests for sign language interpretation or other auxiliary aids to Peggy Haren by telephone at (928) 343-8547. The hearing impaired may contact Ms. Haren at the number above via a toll free TTY relay at 1-800-833-6388.

Reclamation will accept comments on the Draft RMP/EA until June 2, 2006. Those unable to attend an open house may send written comments by mail to Coachella Canal Area RMP, D-8580, Bureau of Reclamation, P.O. Box 25007, Denver, Colorado 80225-0007; or by fax to Coachella Canal Area RMP, Bureau of Reclamation, at (720) 544-0603. Comments can also be sent by e mail to ccrmp@do.usbr.gov.
