Reclamation Names Montana Area Manager

The Bureau of Reclamation's Great Plains Regional Director Maryanne Bach today announced the appointment of Dan Jewell as manager of Reclamation's Montana Area Office in Billings. He will start his new position August 30.

Bach said Jewell will be responsible for managing programs and facilities associated with 11 dams and a number of dikes that form 13 reservoirs in the portion of Montana east of the Continental Divide. The water stored in these reservoirs and behind another nine diversion dams provides irrigation water to about 400,000 acres of farmland. He will also be responsible for hydroelectric plants at Canyon Ferry and Yellowtail dams with a total generating capacity of 300 megawatts.

Jewell has been serving as deputy area manager in the Montana Area Office since May 2000. Prior to that he was manager of the Water Resource Services Group in the Great Plains Regional Office in Billings. In that position he also coordinated water resource management activities involving Canada, serving as secretary of the U.S. Section of the Garrison Joint Technical Committee, the Garrison Consultative Group, and the International Souris-Red Rivers Engineering Board.

Between 1989 and 1995 Jewell was a project team leader in the hazardous waste technical assistance program, and then supervisory hydraulic engineer serving as regional water quality and hazardous materials coordinator in the Environmental Affairs Division of the Great Plains Regional Office.

Jewell started his career with Reclamation in 1980 as a rotation (training) engineer in the Bismarck, N.D., office. Between 1981 and 1989 he held positions as an agricultural engineer in Reclamation's Mid-Pacific Regional Office in Sacramento, Calif., and in the regional office in Billings.

Jewell received a bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering from Montana State University in 1979. He was raised on a dryland grain farm near Carter, Mont., and attended high school in Ft. Benton.
