For Release: May 05, 2006

The Bureau of Reclamation will be holding public meetings in eastern Idaho to provide information and collect comments on the draft Environmental Assessment for the Teton River Canyon Resource Management Plan. The RMP will affect over 5,800 acres of Reclamation lands located along 22 miles of the Teton River above the former Teton Dam site in eastern Idaho.

The plan will guide the future use and management of Reclamation lands in and around the Teton River Canyon for the next 15 years.

The draft EA document evaluates the potential environmental impacts associated with three alternatives for the proposed action of implementing the RMP. Alternatives include measures to improve fish and wildlife habitat, restore native vegetation, improve recreation facilities and public access, and provide protection for cultural resources.

Reclamation does not anticipate making major changes to the management of the Teton River Canyon, but the RMP can provide direction to limit degradation of natural and cultural resources while still allowing for unforeseen future opportunities. There are currently no plans to rebuild the dam, but the Teton Dam site remains listed as a protected reservoir site under the Idaho State Water Plan.

The draft EA will be available May 5 for a 30-day comment period. The document will be available on Reclamations website at www.usbr.gov/pn. Follow the links to the Teton River Canyon RMP.
