2006 Colorado River Sweep Volunteers Needed

The Bureau of Reclamation's Yuma Area Office and the Boy Scouts of America are seeking volunteers for the 2006 Colorado River Sweep a "Take Pride in America" activity -- on Saturday, May 6, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

During the "Sweep", volunteers will help remove trash and debris from a 5 mile stretch of Colorado River shoreline between Avenue 2E (near the Yuma East Wetlands) and the 4th Avenue Bridge on the Arizona and California sides of the river.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park parking lot at 1 Prison Hill Road, Yuma, at 7:00 a.m. to sign a participant release form and receive a safety briefing. Volunteers should be prepared for rugged working conditions long sleeved shirts, long pants, closed toe footwear, and hats are suggested, as well as work gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellant. Trash bags and water will be provided.

Agencies providing planning and staff support for this event include the Department of the Interior's Take Pride in America Office, the Boy Scouts of America's Yuma Ocotillo District, the Bureau of Reclamation's Yuma Area Office, the Bureau of Land Management, the Quechan Indian Nation, and the Yuma Crossing State Historic and Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic parks.

The event is co sponsored by Yuma River Tours, Yuma Police Department, Yuma County Sheriff's Office, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Arizona Department of Corrections, and the Yuma National Heritage Area.

All 2006 Colorado River Sweep volunteers and sponsors will be recognized by the Take Pride in America program. The program joins Federal, state, and local governments; conservation, youth, and recreation groups; national corporations; and organizations and individuals in an effort to instill a sense of volunteerism and good stewardship in all public land users.
