April 2006 CVP Water Supply Information Announced

Media Contact: Jeffrey McCracken, 916-978-5100, 04/20/2006 21:56

For Release: April 20, 2006

The Bureau of Reclamation today announced the April Water Year 2006 water supply for the Federal Central Valley Project (CVP). Reclamation uses a conservative update for runoff forecast to determine the water supply available for allocation to the project water users. Typically, this is the 90 percent, April 1 exceedence forecast (hydrological conditions that have a 90-percent chance of exceeding the projection) prepared by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR). However, extremely wet conditions and runoff in the first half of the month have surpassed the April 1, 90 percent exceedence forecast and it is now assumed that the April 1 50 percent exceedence (median) forecast is the appropriate conservative forecast to be used for the water supply determination.

An announcement of Trinity River flows will be forthcoming when the flow schedule has been determined.

The Friant Division deliveries for Water Year 2006 are projected to be 1.5 million acre-feet, or 100 percent of the historic water supply of 1.5 million acre-feet. The preliminary allocation for Friant Division contractors will be 100 percent Class 1 water and Uncontrolled Season for Class 2 water. The Uncontrolled Season will be effective from March 1 through mid-June 2006. The projected Friant Division delivery of 1.5 million acre-feet is based on DWRs 50-percent exceedence forecast. Through March 13, 2006, precipitation in the San Joaquin River watershed was 36.55 inches compared to 40.81 inches this time last year.

The CVP Cross Valley Canal Contractors water supply allocation also increases to 85 percent. This water supply is dependent upon adequate capacity being available at the State Water Project Banks Pumping Plant to convey the water.

The water supply available for the CVP Eastside Division contractors (Stanislaus River) is projected to remain at approximately 155,000 acre-feet.

Throughout the precipitation season, updated information will be provided as conditions warrant. For additional information on the Water Year 2006 water supply, please contact the Public Affairs Office at 916-978-5100, TDD 916-978-5608.
