A $440,000 contract was awarded by the Bureau of Reclamation on Mar. 24 to GeoSystems Analysis, Inc., of Tucson, Ariz., to explore and document the best method of maintaining and/or increasing the viability and longevity of plants and seeds native to areas along the lower Colorado River.

Through its contract, GeoSystems Analysis will conduct a three-year study to demonstrate and monitor how seeds from native cottonwood, willow, mesquite and other shrub species can be used to establish and contribute to the restoration of a large dense-mosaic, natural habitat.

Seeds for the study will be collected at various locations along the lower Colorado River. Native plants also will be used in combination with other techniques to control weed infestation by saltcedar and other non-native plant species.

The study, a part of multi-agency Multi-Species Conservation Program (MSCP), will help researchers and scientists determine methods to restore habitat for the MSCP. It will begin with small demonstrations in a laboratory/greenhouse setting at University of Arizona Office of Arid Land Studies-Southwest Center for Natural Products Research and Commercialization, in Tucson. Then, a large planting demonstration will be conducted in January 2007 at the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge, located about 20 miles south of Blythe, Calif.

The period of performance for the GeoSystems Analysis, Inc., contract extends from April 10, 2006 to April 30, 2009.
