Millerton Lake Operations - San Joaquin River Flow Increase

Media Contact: Jeffrey McCracken, 916-978-5100, jmccracken@mp.usbr.gov

For Release: March 31, 2006

The Bureau of Reclamation has increased releases from Friant Dam to the San Joaquin River from 2,000 to 2,500 cubic feet per second (cfs). Reclamation plans to increase releases up to 3,500 cfs by Sunday, April 2, 2006. The increased flow provides for flood control and inflow management.

The increased releases make additional storage space available in Millerton Lake to accommodate anticipated snow melt. This release schedule is based on the current forecast and is subject to change. Flows are expected to remain high due to runoff and upstream operations. Reclamation staff will continue to monitor the weather forecasts and hydrologic conditions and will adjust project operations based on the most current information.

Reclamation anticipates maintaining an average combined outflow of 5,000 cfs between the Friant-Kern Canal, Madera Canal, and the San Joaquin River throughout the month of April 2006 (subject to hydrologic conditions).

Individuals planning activities along the San Joaquin River should be aware that flows will be higher than typical for this time of year.
