The Bureau of Reclamation issued a Draft Environmental Assessment for the Taneum Canal Company Water Acquisition, located in Kittitas County near the town of Thorp, Washington.

The purpose of the proposed action is to enhance anadromous fish habitat in Taneum Creek below the Taneum Canal Company diversion during winter months. Currently, TCC has a legal right to divert the majority of winter flows out of Taneum Creek, leaving the creek nearly dry at times. When this occurs, these conditions may prevent anadromous fish from using the creek for passage, rearing, and spawning activities.

Two alternatives were analyzed in the Draft EA: the no action alternative, which assumes that no federal action will take place; and the preferred alternative which is to purchase the winter stock water right. Under the preferred alternative, Reclamation would purchase 10 acre-feet winter stock water right from the TCC to be left in the lower reach of Taneum Creek. The water would be diverted at a maximum rate of 30 cubic feet per second between November and February.
